Fed meeting, GDP and earnings week ahead preview

UK Chief Market Analyst Michael Hewson looks at the sharp rise in the euro, and whether the upcoming US Federal Reserve meeting will stem the decline in the US dollar. He also discusses UK and US Q2 GDP, UK banks and upcoming US tech earnings.

Strong French & German data may pile pressure on ECB to cut stimulus

Monday: The euro has been one of the best performing currencies so far this year, largely due to significant economic improvements across the board. Pressure is already increasing on the European Central Bank to ease back on its stimulus programme, and further positive data in the form of flash manufacturing and services PMI numbers could add to this pressure.

Are technology stocks driving a US equity bubble?

Monday-Wednesday-Thursday: With Alphabet and Amazon briefly pushing above $1,000 a share in the last quarter, concern has been growing that technology stocks may be responsible for an equity bubble. Will Q2 trading updates from Alphabet (Mon), Facebook (Wed) and Amazon (Thu) reinforce those concerns, or fuel the recent rally as technology stocks hollow out the US retail sector with their online presence?

Will preliminary Q2 GDP data show a strengthening UK economy?

Wednesday: Recent economic data has indicated a moderate pickup in the UK economy in the second quarter, and the first GDP reading for Q2 will show how far this is true. So far, construction and manufacturing PMIs have been positive for April and May, suggesting a possible improvement.

Weak Q2 GDP data could further weigh on the US dollar

Friday: After three rate rises in six months, the US economy appears to be struggling to improve following a disappointing Q1. In contrast to the economy, the US consumer had a decent first quarter. However, data has shown signs that consumers are cutting back in Q2, while a lack of inflation suggests a deficit in demand. A weak GDP number could undermine the US dollar further, which is almost down 10% year to date.

UK banking giants report half-year results

Thursday-Friday: Recent updates from US banks have been a mixed bag so far, with low market volatility causing a slowdown in fixed income. While this isn’t as much of a problem for Lloyds Banking Group (Thu) as it may potentially be for Barclays (Fri), the performance of the UK economy and rise in consumer debt could cause concern if high inflation continues to squeeze wages.
