The holding company was established in 1990 as a successor of the Central Electricity Generating Board (CEGB) with headquarters in London. National Grid operates in the business areas of power distribution, electricity transmission, electricity system operation and gas transmission, as well as owning several subsidiaries engaging in renewable energy generation such as wind and solar power. It also owns the corporate venture capital and innovation Group, National Grid Partners, which invests in start-ups involved in energy and emerging technology.
