Once you've become familiar with domestic shares, you might be interested in exploring the wider world of international share trading.
The minimum order size for international shares is AUD $1,000 per buy order. This minimum applies to all international markets available on the CMC Invest platforms. However, for a selection of US stocks and ETFs, we offer the flexibility to purchase without a minimum order value - simply purchase at least one unit.
The 2% Foreign Exchange (FX) buffer is not an additional fee. The buffer acts as a cushion against currency movements ensuring there are sufficient available funds in your account to fill your order. When your order fills, excess funds are automatically added back to your 'available funds' value on the platform. Buffer funds are not withdrawn from your settlement account, but only locked in the 'available funds' calculation until your order has filled. The buffer only applies to 'buy' orders.
Example
Jane submits an order to buy US$1,000 of US shares at 10:30 am Sydney time.
At the time she places her order the exchange rate is 1.489 and the US market is closed. The estimated AUD value of the order is $1,489.00 + $0.00 brokerage = AUD $1,489.00. The trading platform applies a buffer of AUD 30.17 (2%) to the order as protection against exchange rate fluctuations.
By the time the US market opens the exchange rate has moved to 1.481 and the order is submitted and executed immediately. The AUD value of the order at execution is $1,481.00 + $0.00 brokerage = AUD $1,481.00. The buffer is now released from Jane's "Available to Trade value" on the trading platform.
The exchange rate for international transactions is calculated at the time of execution and is based on the best available bid/offer exchange rates, plus a FX buffer of 2% and a spread of 0.60%.
All share certificates will need to be dematerialised (where physical records are replaced with a paperless computerised system) prior to being transferred in. We cannot accept share certificates.

Your international securities are held in a custody arrangement between CMC Markets Stockbroking and BNP Paribas SA, a wholly owned subsidiary of the BNP Paribas Group, a leading global custodian and securities services provider.
Placing an order for an international equity is the same as for domestic stocks. Find your preferred stock and fill out the order ticket with the quantity/price and any additional instructions.

You can place conditional orders on international stocks across the US, Singapore and New Zealand markets with the CMC Invest web platform or mobile app.
On the web platform:
Go to Trade and select Buy or Sell.
Enter the stock code, order type, and quantity.
In Instructions, select Conditional order, then add your trigger details, style, and expiry.
To add a Stop Loss or Take Profit, expand the section and complete the details.
Review your order, enter your PIN, and place your order.
On the mobile app:
Tap More > Trade, then enter the order type, stock code, and quantity.
Under Instructions, select Conditional order, add your trigger details, style, and expiry.

Review your order, enter your PIN, and confirm.
Are international conditional orders available outside of market hours?
Yes, you can place an international conditional order anytime. The order will only be triggered during the exchange’s trading session.
How long can an international conditional order remain active?
With International Conditional Orders, you can set the expiry to ‘Good till cancelled’ (GTC). This means your order will remain active until it is triggered, cancelled by you, or affected by a corporate action. Once the condition is met, the order will be placed as a Day Only order, meaning it is valid for that trading day only.
By comparison, a standard International GTC order (without the conditional order trigger) expires after 30 calendar days if it hasn’t been filled.

Yes, you’ll be able to set if your trades are placed during the regular session or in after-hours trading. Orders placed during the standard trading session can be set to expire at the end of regular trading, or stay open for the after hours trading session if unfilled. We’ll remember your extended hours trading preference for future orders, although this can be changed at any time.
After hours trading carries heightened risk over trading during a market’s regular opening hours. Additional volatility can result in larger price movements, due to lower liquidity.
You can trade the US market 5.5hrs before open and 4hrs after close, in addition to normal hours.
Pre-Market: 4:00am - 9:30am New York time
After Hours: 4:00pm - 8:00pm New York time
Depending on the time of year, this equates to:
Pre-Market Trading starts: 6:00pm - 8:00pm AEST/AEDT
After Hours Trading finishes: 10:00am -12:00pm AEST/AEDT
Extended hours trading (that is, trading pre-open and after close) allows you to react to critical events that occur outside of an exchange’s opening hours. These could include responses to earnings reports, company news, international events and political movements.
The International Stock Lending Program gives eligible clients the opportunity to earn income on international stocks they already own if their stocks are lent out. Once opted in, our globally recognised partner BNP Paribas SA, is provided with consent to lend your stocks to borrowers on a supply and demand basis.
Eligibility
To participate in the International Stock Lending Program, you or your entity must meet the wealth test qualifications as a Wholesale Investor. This involves satisfying one of the following test criteria:
net assets of at least $2.5 million;
or gross income of at least $250,000 per year for the last two financial years.
The International Stock lending program is available for individual, joint, company, trust, and SMSF’s with a corporate trustee.
There are risks involved with becoming a Wholesale Investor and the International Stock Lending Program, please ensure you are aware of them before participating.

How do I opt in for the International Stock Lending Program?
Individual Accounts:
Log in to your web trading platform, navigate to Settings > Trading Settings > Stock Lending settings then click Add accounts
Once the pop up appears, select your individual account and click ‘Save’ to proceed to the ‘CMC Invest Wholesale Investor Classification’ page
Submit your valid accountant certificate form, indicating whether you would like CMC Invest to contact your accountant directly by email and manage the form’s completion and submission on your behalf, then opt into Stock Lending by accepting the relevant terms and risk disclosures.
Non-Individual Accounts:
Log in to the web trading platform, navigate to Help > Forms > Stock lending Forms or,
Download the Wholesale Investor Application Form, complete it, then print it and ensure all account holders sign it in wet ink
Download the Qualified Accountant’s Certificate and have your Accountant complete it, print it and sign it in wet ink
Email the completed forms to wholesaleinvestor@cmcmarkets.com.
How do I opt out of the International Stock Lending Program?
If you no longer wish to have your international stocks loaned out, you can easily opt out of the International Stock Lending Program in your ‘Trading Settings’. Simply log in to your web trading platform, navigate to Trading Settings > Stock Lending settings > Opt out.
