DAX faces a challenging start as strong earnings fail to lift sentiment
The DAX faces a softer open as strong earnings struggle to offset doubts about AI profitability. SAP offers support, Tesla disappoints and Brent near $112 a barrel keeps inflation risks in focus.
The DAX is expected to open slightly lower this morning. Investors are caught between encouraging quarterly earnings and growing doubts about the future of the AI boom. While Meta Platforms and SAP exceeded expectations with their financial results, the enormous sums still being invested in artificial intelligence are fuelling scepticism. The crucial question remains how and when these multibillion-dollar investments can be turned into sustainable profits.
Across Asian markets, this uncertainty triggered another round of profit-taking in technology and semiconductor stocks. While investors welcome strong growth, they are increasingly questioning the profitability of the underlying investments. Strong quarterly earnings alone are no longer sufficient to justify lofty valuations. Companies must prove that the AI boom can translate into a sustainably profitable business model.
For the German equity market, SAP's results are initially providing a positive catalyst. The Walldorf-based software group delivered convincing revenue and earnings figures. However, its more cautious comments about the crucial fourth quarter show that even successful technology companies are feeling the impact of challenging economic conditions. Tesla, by contrast, disappointed investors. Its weaker-than-expected results highlight how subdued consumer spending is leaving a noticeable mark even on major international corporations.
Rising energy prices are adding to the pressure. With Brent crude trading at around $112 a barrel, the tense situation in the Middle East remains a significant risk factor for inflation and corporate earnings. Diplomatic efforts to resolve the war in Ukraine are taking a back seat as investors focus on the immediate economic pressures stemming from elevated energy costs.
Today's agenda promises further market-moving developments, with numerous corporate earnings releases and US labour market data due. The earnings season is increasingly becoming a test of the lofty expectations priced into equities. Markets have entered a phase in which good news is barely rewarded, while disappointments are punished all the more severely. This leaves them particularly vulnerable to further sharp price swings.

DAX opens higher as AI earnings restore some optimism
Stronger AI earnings offer the DAX some relief, but Brent above $111 a barrel keeps inflation concerns alive. UK inflation and further corporate results are in focus, with a trading range of 25,250–25,550 points.
