FTSE 100 shows relative resilience as defensive and commodity stocks provide support
The FTSE 100 is trading around 10,806 as investors favour defensive sectors and commodity stocks amid rising energy prices.
The FTSE 100 is currently trading at around 10,806 points, showing only limited signs of the broader downbeat mood across equity markets. In the UK, defensive sectors and commodity stocks are preventing the broader market from suffering more significant losses. Investors are adopting a considerably more defensive stance on Tuesday than in recent trading sessions, with rising energy prices increasingly shaping their positioning. Financials, banks and technology stocks, by contrast, are currently out of favour and are weighing on the overall market.
Half-year results from technology company Computacenter were solid, but failed to provide lasting support for the shares. A similar pattern has recently been evident among US technology stocks, including Broadcom. Expectations for the AI sector have reached exceptionally high levels and are now difficult for all but a handful of companies to exceed. Simply meeting market expectations is no longer enough to attract additional buyers.
Overall sentiment remains positive, but a clear wait-and-see approach among investors is also evident in the UK equity market. Market participants are now looking ahead to today’s reopening of Wall Street after the long holiday weekend for fresh direction.
