What are Option CFDs?

An option CFD is a contract that gives the purchaser the right, but not the obligation, to buy or sell a financial product at an agreed price if the product moves beyond that price within a specific period of time. 
 

Our option CFDs are traded OTC (over-the-counter) via your CMC CFD account. All our options products are cash-settled, this means you don’t take ownership of the underlying asset; instead, any profit or loss is settled in cash. You can trade option CFDs across a selection of major US and European indices, as well as US tech giants in the magnificent seven including Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia and Tesla.

Do I need a separate account to trade Option CFDs?

No, you can trade option CFDs directly from your existing CMC Markets CFD trading account.

What instruments can I trade Option CFDs on?

We offer Option CFDs on major global indices, including the S&P 500, Nasdaq 100, Germany 40 and UK 100, as well as a broad range of leading US-listed stocks, including Apple, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia and Tesla. 

What is the options chain and how do I use it?

The options chain is a table that shows available call and put options for a selected instrument across various expiry dates and strike prices. You can access the chain directly from the product library and use it to open an order ticket. 

What is a Limit IOC vs a Protected Market IOC order?

  • Limit IOC: Executes immediately at your specified price or better. Any unfilled portion is cancelled. 

  • Protected Market IOC: Like a market order, but with a platform-set price cap to reduce slippage. Functions like a limit IOC using that maximum price. 

Are there commissions or holding costs on Option CFDs?

No. You only pay the option premium when opening the trade. There are no additional commissions, holding costs, or financing charges. The premium can be viewed when opening and closing an Option CFD trade.

Can I close my position before expiry?

Yes, option CFDs positions can be closed at any time before expiry. This allows you to lock in profits or limit losses as market conditions change. 

Where do I monitor my open Option CFDs positions?

You can view all your open option CFDs positions in the ‘Option CFD Positions’ section of the platform. To access it, go to the top menu and select ‘Account’ > ‘Option CFD Positions’. From there, you can monitor live profit and loss (P&L), margin, premium, Greeks, and manage your trades, including closing or adjusting positions as needed. 

What are Greeks and implied volatility?

Greeks measure how various factors affect the option’s price - such as time decay (Theta), price sensitivity (Delta), and volatility (Vega). These are displayed in the order ticket and options chain as indicative values to help you understand risk.
