Netflix under the spotlight as it unveils Q2 results
Monday: Netflix's share price has slipped back in recent weeks, on concerns about an over-valuation in technology stocks. This is despite optimism that subscriber growth will continue in Q2. The company reported a decent profit in Q1, but there is speculation that subscriber and revenue growth could start to slow. If this is confirmed, shares could have further to fall.
Goldman Sachs and Bank of America roll out Q2 figures
Tuesday: The recent flattening of the US yield curve could see US banks under-deliver for this quarter, following a good performance in Q1. Optimism about a reflation trade has diminished since the end of the first quarter as yields have dropped back. This week's updates from Goldman Sachs and Bank of America could reflect that.
ECB meets amid mounting pressure
Thursday: Euro traders will be watching this week's interest-rate meeting closely after recent unexpectedly hawkish comments from President Mario Draghi about a well-performing European economy. The comments raised expectations that ECB policymakers will come under pressure to outline some form of exit procedure from the current stimulus path which, given current economic conditions, is considered too loose.
Bank of Japan to announce interest-rate decision
Thursday: Despite the recent hawkishness from central bank officials globally, the Bank of Japan has given no indication that it will be joining the recent change in tone. Japan’s inflation remains below target, and though the economy is growing, policymakers will want to ensure that the yen remains weak.
Can Unilever keep Heinz at bay?
Thursday: The recent failed bid by Heinz for the Anglo-Dutch giant appears to have shifted focus on to senior management, after recent measures to improve margins helped Unilever boost dividend profit at the end of last year. With speculation that Heinz could return with a hostile bid gathering momentum, Unilever's Q2 update needs to deliver to keep shareholders on side.
