Prospects for oil prices, the euro and sterling

Michael Hewson looks at the future prospects for the euro, oil prices and the pound, and the recent divergences between US and European stock markets.

Will InterContinental shareholders toast half-year results?
Tuesday: Despite pressure from companies like AirBnb, the Holiday Inn and Crowne Plaza owner seems to be easing concerns about tighter margins and cash-conscious consumers. At the end of its last financial year, InterContinental Hotels returned $400m to shareholders, sending shares to record highs. A focus on business customers and record occupancy levels has kept management upbeat about its outlook.

Unhappily ever after for Disney?
Tuesday: When Disney reported its Q2 numbers, revenues came in below expectations, although the success of Beauty and the Beast and a 20% rise in profits from theme parks helped. How will declining subscriber numbers and the success of streaming options impact Q3 results for the traditional cable provider?

China trade data & CPI due
Tuesday & Wednesday: Recent PMI data suggests that the Chinese economy is holding up well, despite concerns about a recent slowdown. The recovery in both import and export data in June points to a fairly resilient local as well as global economy, however inflation still remains fairly benign, suggesting a fragile backdrop.

Cineworld could reap the benefits of summer blockbusters
Thursday: Shares in Cineworld have proven to be quite resilient this year with sales rising 13% when the company reported in March. However, with consumer spending subdued so far this year, this week’s half-year results might disappoint. That said, the slew of summer blockbusters out this year could mean a slow quarter now may well be shrugged off by the end of 2017.

Snap Q2 earnings unlikely to shine
Thursday: Snap Inc shares have already slipped below their IPO price – not totally surprising given the $25bn sky-high valuation when it was launched. The cannibalisation of its ‘stories’ feature by Facebook won’t have helped either, and given its narrow demographic, its ability to turn a profit is likely to be constrained further until it comes up with a different USP.

Will US inflation lag behind expectations?
Friday: Inflationary pressures in the US continue to lag behind expectations, and this week’s July CPI data isn’t likely to buck the trend, with the number expected to remain well below the Fed’s 2% target at 1.7%. The recent weakness of the US dollar may help in pushing prices higher in the short term, but on a long-term basis they remain weak.
