The market reaction to today’s retail sales reports for the UK and Canada have been quite different. The UK report has been shrugged off as 4%+ growth is still nothing to sneeze at even though expectations were higher and it takes a bit of pressure off the Bank of England to raise rates immediately. The Canadian report can easily be blamed on the Polar Vortex that sent crushingly low temperatures across the country for most of the month. While the job numbers rebounded because people have to go to work, some trips to the mall can be delayed and clearly were. This weather impact could dissipate in February as the weather has improved. Still, the poor number has sent CAD to the bottom of the majors league standings and USDCAD back above $1.1100. While we could see action in specific stocks off of news today, broader indices have been consolidating as we move toward the weekend with US indices trading slightly higher this morning following a rebound in Asia Pacific markets overnight. Gold is also on the rebound today as it continues to consolidate its breakout rally. Natural gas is climbing once again as traders speculate strong winter demand may hang around for a while yet.
