Chinese data to set the agenda This week’s macroeconomic data will be dominated by China. The world’s second biggest economy publishes trade balance (Mon), inflation (Tue), industrial production (Thu) and retail sales (Thu) numbers. Are low interest rates affecting insurers? Low interest rates are threatening insurers’ ability to earn the returns needed to pay out on some insurance products. Standard Life (Tue), Legal & General (Tue) and Prudential (Wed) report this week. Can its cable channels boost Disney? Disney (Tue) shares are languishing 20% down from the record high reached before the release of ‘Star Wars: A Force Awakens’ last year. The outlook for its cable channels, including ESPN, will be closely watched. Are luxury goods back in fashion? The luxury sector is starting to recover from anti-graft policies in China, which hit demand. The likes of Coach (Tue), Michael Kors (Wed) and Ralph Lauren (Wed) update the markets.
Will New Zealand follow Australia’s lead? The Reserve Bank of Australia cut interest rates to record lows last week, so the pressure is now on the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (Wed) to match the action of its biggest trading partner. How healthy is the US retail sector? The retail sector is front and centre for US stocks and the dollar this week. Look out for US retail sales (Fri) plus earnings from Macy’s (Thu), Kohl’s (Thu), Nordstrom (Thu) and JC Penney (Fri).
