Will the Fed's reluctance to raise rates trump a stronger dollar?
One of Donald Trump’s main criticisms of the Federal Reserve over the years has been its reluctance to raise interest rates. This may change in the months ahead as a strong US dollar acts as a headwind to the US economy. This week we get the January jobs numbers and latest Fed outlook for the US economy.
Is Apple losing its shine?
Tuesday: Three months ago Apple saw its first annual drop in profit for 15 years as iPhone sales fell 5%, raising concerns that the iPhone may have peaked. Despite this, sales came in at $46.85bn and profit at $9bn, boosting its cash pile to $237bn. Will sales continue to decline?
Exxon shareholders hope to strike oil
Tuesday: The rebound in oil prices over the past 12 months has reduced mainstream oil companies' concerns over rising margin compression. Will market-leader ExxonMobil beat expectations as it did in Q3, or will its broader product range mitigate the effects of the rebound in oil prices?
Bank of England rate decision & quarterly inflation report
Thursday: This week’s Bank of England rate decision and quarterly inflation report could signal the potential for an increase in base rates given the risks of rising inflationary pressures. Will the Bank harden its tone about the prospects of some form of tightening in the face of rising prices?
Will AstraZeneca's results give their shares a shot in the arm?
Thursday: It’s been a tough few weeks for AstraZeneca with the share price down over 15% since the August highs, as concerns about its product pipeline and Donald Trump's pledge to crackdown on drug prices weigh on the sector. Will this week’s full-year results reinforce these concerns?
Vodafone shareholders await Q3 trading update
Thursday: Adding to problems in its Indian operation, Vodafone was fined £4.6m by Ofcom at the end of last year for falling short of consumer protection rules. Its European business has however continued to show signs of improvement. As one of the bigger dividend payers in the FTSE 100 (5.6%), any slowdown in revenues could prompt concerns.
Will GoPro shares get the jolt of adrenaline they need?
Thursday: When GoPro first came to market in 2014 at $24, optimism was high that the action-camera maker would shift a lot of product. Shares peaked at $90 but are now trading below $10, and last year the company cut 15% of its workforce in an attempt to return to profit. This week’s numbers will reveal whether the strategy has worked.
