How could UK inflation & earnings affect EUR & GBP?
UK Chief Market Analyst Michael Hewson looks ahead to the latest UK inflation and wages releases, Monday's Chinese economic data and the prospects for the euro and sterling.
Is China’s economy slowing down?
Monday: Recent economic data from China suggests inflation is starting to trail off, with a slide in commodity prices fuelling anxiety about an economic slowdown after a strong 2016. April’s retail sales and industrial production data may reinforce those concerns, which could disrupt financial markets in the weeks ahead.
Vodafone engaged by competition
Tuesday: Earlier this year Vodafone downplayed expectations of profit growth in its annual results, with price competition affecting margins. In India, the company has agreed to merge with Idea Cellular in order to mitigate the damage a price war is currently wreaking, while speculation has been rife that it might need to do something similar in the UK.
US retailers face up to perfect storm
Tuesday-Thursday: The growth of online retail has eaten into the market share of US retailers like Home Depot, Target and Wal-Mart. Weak US retail sales this year suggests there is scope for downside disappointment in Q1, which could act as a further headwind to the big out-of-town retailers. Home Depot may buck this trend given recent strength in some US housing data.
SSE share price feels the heat ahead of full-year numbers
Wednesday: The recent announcement from the UK government that it will place a cap on energy prices if it wins next month’s election has hit SSE’s share price in recent days. Earlier this year the company warned it might miss expectations due to mild winter weather, before announcing it was raising prices from 28 April, presumably to help offset such an event.
Is Burberry going out of fashion?
Thursday: While Burberry has performed strongly in its UK and China business, it hasn’t lived up to expectations in Hong Kong or the US. The fall in the pound and recovery in Chinese consumption in the past year brought about a significant lift in the second half of 2016, but there is concern that US dollar strength in other regions could act as a drag on its annual results and going forward.
